Reducing the Generation and Use of Hazardous Substances Through Green Chemistry
EPA continues to play a central role in coordinating
Green Chemistry efforts, which encourages the development of safer, or green, chemicals as
substitutes for more hazardous chemicals. Its program partners, including companies, trade associations, scientific societies, and other federal agencies, including the National Science Foundation, and the Departments of Energy and Commerce, promote green chemistry through research grants, awards, tools, conferences, and publications. The 2002 and 2003 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge-award winning technologies prevented over 130 million pounds of hazardous substances and 57 million pounds of carbon dioxide from being used or released each year. Hundreds of companies are engaged in this voluntary program through research and implementation.
