The White House Easter Egg Roll 2002 Easter at the White House
The White House Easter Egg Roll is an annual tradition dating back to 1878 and President Rutherford B. Hayes. It is the largest public event held at the White House with activities planned for children age six and under.

This year's event will be held on Monday, April 1, 2002, on the Ellipse and South Lawn of the White House. The event is free to the general public; however, a ticket is required for the South Lawn events.

The National Park Service will distribute free South Lawn tickets on two dates. The majority of the tickets will be available on Saturday, March 30, 2002, beginning at 8 a.m. The remaining tickets will be available on Monday, April 1, 2002, beginning at 7 a.m. These tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the Ellipse Visitor Pavilion at the southwest corner of 15th and E Streets, NW. Tickets will have timed-entries from approximately 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. A maximum of five tickets will be issued per person. Children of all ages are welcome to attend, as long as there is at least one child age six or under and no more than two adults per group. Tickets are required for every attendee, including small children.

All entry and activities to the event begin on the Ellipse with food and roving entertainment. The National Park Service will escort ticketed groups from the Ellipse to the South Lawn for the egg roll and other activities.

  • Food, coolers, and lawn chairs are not permitted on the South Lawn. In order to facilitate entry into the event, please limit your carry-in items.
  • Strollers and wheelchairs are allowed.
  • All public entry into the Egg Roll will begin on the Ellipse. You will be escorted to the South Lawn per your designated ticket time.
  • Parking is not available near the White House. The use of public transportation is strongly encouraged. The closest Metro stops are Federal Triangle and Metro Center.

    • In case of inclement weather, the Egg Roll will be cancelled.

    Spring Garden and Grounds Tour
    This year's White House Spring Garden and Grounds Tour will take place on two dates: Saturday, April 13, 2002, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Sunday, April 14, 2002, from 12 noon - 4 p.m.

    The event is open to the public; however, a ticket is required for all attendees, including small children. The National Park Service will distribute free, timed-entry tickets at the White House Visitor Center located at 15th and E Streets both days beginning at 7:30 a.m. Tickets will be distributed one to a person on a first-come, first-served basis.

    Entry for the Garden Tours will begin on the Ellipse. You will be escorted to the South Lawn per your designated ticket time. In order to facilitate entry into the grounds, please limit your carry-in items. Strollers, wheelchairs and cameras are allowed.

    Visitors will view the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden, Rose Garden, Children's Garden and South Lawn of the White House while military bands perform on the balcony.

    Fall Garden and Grounds Tour
    The 2002 Fall Garden and Grounds Tour will be held on a to-be-determined weekend in the Fall of 2002.


    Senior Citizen Holiday Tour
    For specific information and guidelines governing 2002 holiday tours, please reference this site after August 2002. Please do not submit your requests prior to the posting of the new guidelines.
