African American Author, Poet, and Professor Inspires Tunisian Students
Fact of the Day

In honor of African American History Month, African American author, poet and professor Brenda Flannigan spent 10 days in Tunisia discussing African American literature. Flannigan spoke to more than 1,700 students at 11 universities throughout the country. Her program was covered by a radio station and by a privately owned Arabic-language daily with a circulation of 65,000. Students were inspired by her lectures on subjects such as the Harlem Renaissance, Post Modernism, Toni Morrison, and her own literature. Flannigan was asked by several Tunisian universities to return in the future as a visiting professor, and the students gained a deeper understanding of the United States.
