Iraqis Negotiate New Government
Fact of the Day
Iraqi political parties are engaging in negotiations to establish the new government since no single party received the two-thirds majority required to elect a Prime Minister. More than 8.5 million Iraqis, 58 percent of those registered, turned out to vote Jan. 30 despite threats of violence and terrorist attacks. Election results were certified last week. The United Iraqi Alliance, the Kurdistan Alliance and the Iraqi List received the majority of the votes for seats in the 275-member Transitional National Assembly.
