Nations Come Together to Fight Proliferation
Fact of the Day
Japan, Australia, France, the United States, and 18 other nations are participating in a training exercise off the coast of Japan this week as part of an international effort to halt the spread of weapons of mass destruction. The exercise -- organized under the Proliferation Security Initiative and hosted by Japan -- helps countries improve their ability to work together to seize weapons of mass destruction on the high seas before they reach their intended destinations. The Proliferation Security Initiative was announced by President Bush in 2003 and is supported by more than 60 countries. The current exercise represents a dynamic and proactive approach to preventing transfers of weapons of mass destruction.
