President Names Senior Advisor for Welfare Policy
President Bush Announced Ron Haskins to be a Senior Advisor for Welfare Policy

President George W. Bush today announced that Ron Haskins has joined the White House on a temporary and part time basis to be Senior Advisor for Welfare Policy.  Mr. Haskins will work with the Domestic Policy Council and Secretary Thompson to advise the President on issues relating to the reauthorization of the federal welfare reform legislation. Haskins will continue to serve as a senior consultant at the Annie E. Casey Foundation in Baltimore and as a Guest Scholar at the Brookings Institution.

Mr. Haskins was most recently a senior fellow in the Economic Studies Program at the Brookings Institution and a co-director of the Institution's Welfare Reform & Beyond Initiative. While at Brookings, he concentrated on welfare reform, child care, child support enforcement, and child protection.  Prior to joining Brookings, Haskins spent 14 years on the staff of the House Ways and Means Human Resources Subcommittee, first as welfare counsel to the Republican staff, then as the subcommittee's staff director.

From 1981-1985, Haskins was a senior researcher at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where he was also a research professor. He also taught and lectured on history and education at UNC, Charlotte and developmental psychology at Duke University.

He holds a Bachelor's degree in History, a Master's in Education, and a Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology, from UNC, Chapel Hill. Haskins, who was a noncommissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps, lives with his wife and son in Rockville, Maryland.
