President Bush to Nominate Palmer to be Ambassador of the United States to Portugal

President George W. Bush today announced his intention to nominate John N. Palmer to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to Portugal.

"John Palmer is a telecommunications pioneer, public servant and philanthropist. His leadership in both the public and private sector will serve the United States well in strengthening our close economic and security relations with Portugal," said President Bush.

Palmer is currently the Chairman of GulfSouth Capital, Inc. in Jackson, Mississippi and served as the Chairman of SkyTel from 1989 until its sale to MCI WorldCom in 1999. He was appointed by President Bush to sit on the President's Export Council as a Private Sector Advisor to the Secretary of Commerce and by President Reagan as the Private Sector Trade Advisor to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. A native of Mississippi, he received both an undergraduate and M.B.A. from the University of Mississippi.
