Fort Hood to Receive 6,000 New and Refurbished Housing Units
Public-Private Partnership Fulfills President Bush’s Pledge to Improve Military Housing
Washington, DC, April 12, 2001 -- As part of President George W.
Bush’s commitment to improve military housing, the Office of Management and
Budget today announced a public-private partnership that will build and
refurbish 6,000 housing units at Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. The initiative
was developed with the Department of the Army and the Secretary of Defense.
The housing improvement initiative will replace and refurbish up to
6,000 units at Fort Hood and will set a new standard of quality for Army
communities. The plan calls for nearly 1,000 new four-bedroom units in the
next five years and major renovations on 1,400 units by expanding and
improving living space.
Enhanced landscapes, parks, and recreational areas will foster
community and make the base more attractive. Upon completion, all of the
housing at Fort Hood will have been replaced or improved. The project will
be the largest military housing initiative ever completed by this type of
partnership, virtually doubling the number of units privatized to date. The
administration proposal will be sent to Congress for approval.
OMB Director Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. said, "President Bush is
committed to safe, up-to-date, and comfortable communities for America’s
service men and women and their families. Today’s action will begin to
address the widespread problem of inadequate and substandard housing on our
military bases."
