  • Judge John Daniel Tinder was confirmed on December 18, 2007, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, which hears appeals from the federal district courts of Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
    • Judge Tinder is known for his strong intellectual abilities, hard work, fairness, judicial temperament, thoroughness, and excellent written work.
  • Judge Tinder has a distinguished record as a federal judge, prosecutor, and practicing attorney.
    • From 1987 until his elevation to the Seventh Circuit, Judge Tinder served as a United States District Court Judge for the Southern District of Indiana. In that capacity, he adjudicated the full range of issues that are brought in the federal courts—from complex civil litigation to constitutional questions to challenging criminal prosecutions.
    • From 1984 to 1987, Judge Tinder was United States Attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. In that capacity, he was the chief federal law enforcement officer for a good portion of Indiana, responsible for criminal prosecutions and civil enforcement. During that time, he also served as a member of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee. Prior to becoming the United States Attorney, Judge Tinder also served as an Assistant United States Attorney.
    • Before joining the United States Attorney’s Office, Judge Tinder gained a wide range of experience, serving as a public defender, a state prosecutor, and a private practitioner, all in Indianapolis. He appeared numerous times in both state and federal courts and handled both civil and criminal cases.
