President Bush traveled to St. Petersburg, Russia to attend the G-8 Summit on July 15-17, 2006. The G-8 Summit included leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The European Union also participated. As at previous G-8 Summits, the leaders discussed continued cooperation on a broad range of international economic, security, and political issues.
At the invitation of Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Bush traveled to northeastern Germany in advance of his participation in the G-8 Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia. Chancellor Merkel hosted President Bush on July 13, 2006 in the towns of Stralsund and Trinwillershagen, which are in the Chancellor's electoral constituency. The visit, which will take place in what had been communist East Germany, underscores our two nations' commitment to advancing freedom and prosperity, and to strengthening the transatlantic partnership. The two leaders look forward to discussing a wide range of global challenges, in particular continuing their consultations on Iran and preparation for the G-8 Summit.
