U.S. Provided 50 Percent of All Bilateral Donor Assistance To HIV/AIDS In 2002

The U.S. is the largest bilateral donor of HIV/AIDS assistance, providing half of all international HIV/AIDS funding in 2002 in over 50 countries.

  • The U.S. provided $790 million bilateral assistance for HIV/AIDS in 2002, $476 million more than the next largest donor and 50 percent of all amounts budgeted by all donors.
  • Since 1986, U.S. bilateral assistance has dedicated over $2.3 billion for the prevention of the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the developing world.
  • In FY 2001, the U.S. Center for Disease Control's domestic and international HIV/AIDS program, including research, surveillance, interventions, and evaluation, totaled $848 million.
