The Ladies in White is an organization that includes spouses and other relatives of jailed Cuban dissidents. The organization was formed in 2003 to protest the arrest of 75 dissidents by the Cuban regime. Members of the organization have been consistently detained, threatened, and at times beaten by police during their peaceful protests.

The visit was to highlight the importance of historical preservation and celebrate the role immigration has played in America. Mrs. Laura Bush and daughter Barbara Bush visit the Lower East Side Tenement Museum in New York City, Friday, Oct. 24, 2008. The tour led by the museum's Vice President of Public Affairs, Mr. David Eng. Mrs. Bush said that it is important for all Americans to remember where we have come from and reflect on our history. She added that the museum makes it possible for visitors to see the past and remind us of our heritage in a diverse, thriving and immigrant culture.

The tour is led by Mr. David Eng, Vice President of Public Affairs, of the museum. The museum received a Preserve America Presidential Award in may and was awarded a National Medal for Museum and Library Services last month for its work in helping to preserve the immigrant history that shapes our country.
