Pennsylvania Avenue

As one of Mrs. Bush's primary initiatives, Preserve America supports the beautification and preservation of our nation's landmarks. Currently, one of America's best-known avenues is undergoing such a process. The block of Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House is undergoing renovation. The plan to redesign this portion of Pennsylvania Avenue is one of the first projects being undertaken in conjunction with Washington's urban design and security plan. The decision to keep the avenue closed to vehicles created the imperative that this important public space be redesigned to create a welcoming public environment and that the design be reversible in the event future technology allows for its reopening. The National Capital Planning Commission selected the landscape architecture firm of Michael Van Valkenburgh to create the design. The final design received unanimous approval by the full Commission on September 4, 2003, clearing the way for the Federal Highway Administration to begin the construction effort.

The redesigned avenue will become an inviting public park. Few places provide such a sense of community and American history as the grounds and parkland around the White House. Key elements of the design include the planting of more than 85 American elms along the length of Pennsylvania, the addition of new benches and lamps, the use of more natural-looking paving material, and the elimination of temporary security barriers.
