Softball Tee Ball: Celebrating Women in Sports

On Wednesday June 27, 2007 the White House celebrated the contribution women have made to the world of sports, with its first-ever game of Softball Tee Ball on the South Lawn. The Luray Little League Red Wings from Luray, Virginia and the Allegany County Little League Bobcats from Cumberland, Maryland were cheered on by invited guests including female athletes who have established reputations as leading sports figures.

Female athletes represent a powerful force in American sports as they exemplify the very best of what it means to engage in spirited competition, and serve as role models for future generations of young women aspiring to careers in the athletic arena.

Hannah Storm from CBS's "The Early Show" was on-hand to serve as the Play-by-Play Announcer. A former sports broadcaster for NBC Sports, Ms. Storm introduced each player as they stepped to the tee and gave viewers some insight on some of the girls’ personalities.

The National Anthem was sung by teen pop stars, the Jonas Brothers. Natives of New Jersey, the Jonas Brothers’ music reveal a lifetime of influences, and combine the boys’ three distinctive voices to create a final product that is a blend of pop, funk, and jazz. The trio released their first album in 2006, and quickly reached the top of Radio Disney’s chart with their song “Year 3000.” Immediately following the game, the Jonas Brothers entertained at the picnic-reception with a selection of their hits.

Softball Tee Ball on the South Lawn was a fun-filled and memorable event, as the White House paid tribute to the lasting contribution women have made to the world of sports.
