For Immediate Release
Office of the First Lady
March 13, 2008
Mrs. Bushs Remarks During a Briefing at GHESKIO
GHESKIO HIV/AIDS Center
Port-au-Prince, Haiti
10:55 A.M. (Local)
MRS. BUSH: Well, one of the things I hope the American press hears from this -- the press from the United States that are here -- is that Haiti is a PEPFAR country, one of the targeted countries with PEPFAR funds. I think a lot of people in the United States thinks that PEPFAR money only goes to countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and I think it's important for the people in the United States to know that there are two countries in the Western Hemisphere -- Haiti and Guyana -- that are also PEPFAR countries. And I think it's a very important commitment on the part of the people of the United States.
And actually, as we speak, the second -- the reauthorization of PEPFAR is being discussed in the United States Congress. I feel very encouraged that the United States Congress will reauthorize with a good, substantial amount of PEPFAR funds that will go on now for a number of years. And I think that's important.
So it's a nice chance to get to be with you all today to see the results of what you all have built and how it's helping people, while this is being discussed in the United States Congress.
Thank you all very much.
END 10:57 A.M. (Local)
