Mrs. Bush's Remarks at Dedication of the George W. Bush Childhood Home
George W. Bush Childhood Home
Midland, Texas
2:20 P.M. CDT
MRS. BUSH: thank you very much. Thank you, Joe and Charlie, for everything you said. Thank you very much, Joe, for the introduction. You know, this isn't the first time Joe has helped introduce me -- one time was at a barbecue here in Midland, back in 1977, in Jan and Joe's backyard, when Joe introduced me to a man named George W. Bush. Thank you for both introductions, Joe. (Laughter and applause.)
It's great to be back home in Midland. I'm thrilled to be here with so many of our oldest and closest friends and our family. We so appreciate your love and your support, and we think about you always in Washington. George sends his very best to everyone here.
I'm grateful that you're here today and for the incredible work you've done on this historic home. You know, George doesn't like to think of his childhood home as historic yet. (Laughter.) But he is turning 60 in July. (Laughter.)
This house has been home to two Presidents and two governors. It's where President Bush, Number 41, and President Bush, Number 43, absorbed the limitless energy and spirit of West Texas, so it will have a place in history. And it was Barbara's base when she was the den mother for George's Cub Scout troop, which almost demands its own museum. (Laughter.)
This home has known a lot of laughter and love. I hope you'll join me in welcoming two people who've shared a lot of laughter and love with me, my father and mother- in-law, President and Mrs. George Bush. (Applause.)
