MRS. BUSH: Thank you, Mr. Director-General.

Mr. President of the General Conference, Madame Chairperson of the Executive Board, Mr. Director-General, distinguished ambassadors, excellencies and ladies and gentlemen, the United States of America is proud to join UNESCO as a partner in the advancement of education, tolerance and human rights. The people of my country believe that education and cooperation can lead to peace, understanding and progress. We commit our enthusiastic support to achieving UNESCO's goals. With strong leadership from all, we can advance human dignity, education and opportunity for all.

We raise our flag to join the flags of the 189 UNESCO member states in seeking the very best of our human hopes for liberty, dignity and peace. (Applause.)
