Median household income was $46,326 in 2005, up 1.1 percent from 2004 after adjusting for inflation. This is the first annual increase in real median household income since 1999. Since 1967, the first year for which household income statistics are available, real median household income was up 30.9 percent

For the fourth consecutive year the poverty rate rose, from 12.5 percent in 2003 to 12.7 percent in 2004. The number of people in poverty increased also, by 1.1 million, to 37.0 million in 2004.

<b>Homeownership Rate (HR)</b><br /> The homeownership rate in the fourth quarter 2007 (67.8 percent) was lower than the fourth quarter 2006 rate (68.9 percent). The homeownership rates in the Midwest, South, and West were lower than their corresponding rates a year ago, while the rate in the Northeast did not change significantly. <p><b>Rental Vacancy Rate (RVR)</b><br /> The rental vacancy rate in fourth quarter 2007 (9.6 percent) was not statistically different from the fourth quarter rate in 2006 (9.8 percent).</p> <p><b>Homeowner Vacancy Rate (HVR)</b><br /> The homeowner vacancy rate in fourth quarter 2007 (2.8 percent) was not statistically different from the fourth quarter 2006 rate (2.7 percent).</p>
