It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and designated as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World in July 2007. A regional trading center, Petra prospered from the first century BCE until the first century AD, when it fell to the Romans in 106 AD. In 1997, a carved relief depicting two pairs of camels and camel drivers were discovered at the entrance of the city. During its time, Petra was a caravan city and trading center for the entire region.
Mrs. Laura Bush tours the Petra Church with Dr. Barbara Porter, Director of the American Center for Oriental Research, during a walk through the ancient city that included homes, a temple, an amphitheater and royal tombs. The church was discovered in 1973 by an American archeologist. It's estimated that the church was built in the fifth century and included three apses. The mosaic tile covered both church's side aisles.
