Laura Ingalls married Almanzo Wilder in the summer of 1885 and moved to the Mansfield home where the "Little House" book series was written in 1894. Her husband objected but obviously finally gave in. Wilder, who has been read by children and adults for over 70 years, is one of Mrs. Bush's favorite authors. The visit was used to help encourage American's to read their classic literature which defines us as a nation, reflects our history and bring us together by expressing our shared ideals.

Mrs. Bush will serve as Honorary Ambassador to the United Nations Literacy Decade through the group's term in 2012.
