Description: NOTE: MCNC ceased to be an entity as they were acquired by RTI. Therefore the award was a new cooperative agreement NNL05AA14A in the amount of $506,325.00 to RTI for funding of research entitled " Laboratory For Distributed Chemical and Biological Sensors" in the area of Physical Science. The proposed research will focus on the development and integration of three types of sensors, dectecting both biological and chemical species in aqueous and gaseous environments: NanoForce Biosensor Arrays; Electrochemical Biosensors; and Miniature Ion Mass and Mobility Spectrometers. The emphasis is on developing smaller, less expensive sensors that consume less power and are more easily deployed. These represent a collection of unique innovative methods and approaches with new concepts for sensing microbial and chemical species; the methods and approaches employed are micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) and carbon nanoturbe (CNT) technologies integrated into microbiology, chemistry, and semi-autonomous sensor networking technology. Potential impact of the proposed work extends into the areas of environmental and human health monitoring.
