Description: This earmark funds: high-latitude studies of ice sheet history and behavior, with special emphasis on grounding zones of ices shelves; low-to-mid-latitude studies involving Pacific Ocean, El Nino and Yucatan speleothems, volcanic volatile emissions into the atmosphere, marine biota, and the carbon dioxide cycle; and studies of the terrestrial biosphere, biomarkers, the carbon cycle, and anthropogenic impacts, especially as they relate to soils and sediments of the Midwest.
