Description: The Center seeks to develop, integrate, and synthesize remote sensing, social assessments, economic considerations, and other information technology applications to improve fire and fuels management at the landscape scale and develop innovative approaches for delivery of these products through training, education, and support for graduate level research. The Center's efforts stem from six broad goals: 1) Advance the effectiveness of fire management operations to improve fire-fighter safety, public safety, and natural resource protection; 2) Contribute knowledge and applications that can be used in planning and implementation of management outcomes to sustain ecological processes while providing socially desirable goods and services from forest and grassland ecosystems; 3) Develop assets and capabilities among natural resource professionals engaged in the administration and management of forests and grasslands; 4) Expand knowledge of remote sensing, social and economic concerns, and information technology systems, their applications, and utility in addressing fire and fuels management through the research and educational programs at The University of Montana; 5) Develop education training, and information delivery programs that meet the specific operational needs of the fire management community; 6) Develop information and decision support for planning and managing wildland fire use. The Center works collaboratively on a number of projects with scientists at the RMRS Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula. No funds are kept at RMRS to support collaborative research because the earmark directs that the funding go to the University.
