Description: The Fire Research and Management Exchange System (FRAMES) is at the University of Idaho. The goal of FRAMES is to be the gateway website for wildland fire and fuels information and technology transfer. The FRAMES website (www.frames.gov) is intended to serve a wide variety of users with different information and technology needs. Managers, researchers, policymakers, educators, students, and the public can find a variety of wildland fire information and tools there. FRAMES is also intended to work with tool and information providers to develop an effective mechanism to jointly identify, develop, and distribute the tools necessary for wildland fire management. In 2003, FRAMES assumed the responsibility of managing Fire Management Tools Online (FMTO), the premier website for delivering electronic tools to the wildland fire community. FMTO was created at the RMRS Fire Sciences Laboratory in Missoula. The objectives of FRAMES include: 1) providing consistent documentation, evaluation, and distribution of the tools necessary for wildland fire management and other partners; 2) creating a communications environment of collaborative partnerships between wildland fire professionals for the dual purposes of tools development / refinement and for information sharing; 3) seeking opportunities to consolidate information and when appropriate make it commonly accessible to wildland fire stakeholders. Sensitive or preliminary data will be security protected; 4) practicing and being an advocate for data collection standards and protocols that help integrate communications, GIS, GPS, remote sensing, and modeling technologies in an effort to create a comprehensive wildland fire management information system (MIS).
