Description: The Southern Pine Beetle (SPB) is the most destructive forest pest in the south. The most recent SPB outbreak impacted portions of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The situation was especially dire in South Carolina where in excess of 67,000 SPB infestations were detected. Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and Tennessee also had significant problems. SPB-killed pines sustain wildfires because of the large amount of dead wood that is left after an outbreak. An adequately funded research effort is needed to develop new control and prevention methods, evaluate existing control methods, and develop techniques for restoration of SPB damaged forests.
