Description: Conducts research and provides education on natural resource management practices that integrate ecological and economic values. The Washington State legislature created the Olympic Natural Resource Center as part of the University of Washington. The Center is funded by a combination of operating funds from the state of Washington, congressional appropriations through the Pacific Northwest Research Station, and other state funds and private grants. The center solicits proposals annually. Projects must compete each year for the funding. Examples of current activities: Use of geographic information systems to serve Olympic region management priorities, Studying the influence of landscape characteristics on murrelet use of forests managed by the Department of Natural Resources in the Olympic Experimental State Forest, Studying the tributary influences on mainstream particle size distribution and bed morphology, Looking at mixed red alder-Sitka spruce stands as a silvicultural approach to prevent damage from the spruce -tip weevil in riparian ecosystems, and Refining a landscape-scale habitat model and inland monitoring program for marbled murrelets in the Olympic Peninsula. Groups benefiting from the Olympic Natural Resource Center include private and public forest managers, resource professionals, non-government organizations, universities, and the interagency effectiveness monitoring group for the Northwest Forest Plan.
