Description: In Endangered Species Act candidate conservation, there are increases of $150,000 (subsequently reduced by the rescission) for Kootenai River burbot... Funds were allocated in the Budget Allocation System and made available for obligation per Director Memo dtd 1/06/2005. Funds were Office Fund Targeted to the field office on February 7, 2005. The Service is part of a broad coalition of stakeholders working to develop a conservation agreement for the transboundary population of lower Kootenai River burbot in portions of Idaho, Montana, and Canada. The effort, begun in summer 2003, is spearheaded by the Kootenai Valley Resource Initiative (KVRI), a group formed by Boundary County, City of Bonners Ferry, and the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho. Also included in the KVRI are state and Canadian provincial agencies, industry, and conservation group representatives. The Idaho Congressional delegation and the Idaho Governor's office are in favor of a conservation agreement to conserve the burbot. The additional funding is earmarked for the completion of the conservation strategy for the at-risk population of burbot in the Kootenai River of Idaho and Kootenay Lake, British Columbia.
