Description: The Service will continued to provide a comprehensive, long-term protection strategy for the Hackensack Meadowlands. The Service worked closely with the NJMC, other local stakeholders, the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife, and other federal agencies in the planning process for protection, remediation, and management of sites in the Meadowlands. Public education and outreach, on behalf of the Meadowlands ecosystem, also continued. Concurrently, the Service has entered into an Interagency Agreement with the Corps New York District (which includes the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission as the non-federal sponsor, pursuant to Section 324 of the Water Resources Development Act [1996]) to provide technical assistance to the Feasibility Study of the Comprehensive Restoration Implementation Plan for the Hackensack Meadowlands Environmental Restoration, a component of the larger Hudson-Raritan Estuary Restoration. Current emphases of the technical assistance include environmental contamination, invasive species, ecosystem fragmentation, altered hydrologic regimes, habitat loss, and public use/access.
