Description: Funding was directed to the Maine Atlantic Salmon Conservation Fund (MASCF) which provides assistance to private landowners, industry and conservation groups working to restore Atlantic salmon. The funds supported projects to protect, restore and reconnect habitat, improve local capacity, assessment and planning, and to enrich fisheries. Program priorities are based on actions identified as urgent by the National Research Council and the Service's Atlantic Salmon Recovery Plan. Other projects include habitat protection on the Sheepscot, Narraguagus, East Machias and Pleasant Rivers (80% of the riparian habitat along the mainstems of the Machias, Dennys and Ducktrap Rivers has already been protected with support from the MASCF). The funds also supported projects for fish passage, restoring riparian and riverine habitat on all eight salmon rivers, building organizational capability of local grassroots organizations, and conducting other Atlantic salmon assessment and management activities directly related to recovery.
