Description: The Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition's Sistas and Brothas United (SBU) will provide positive alternatives to area gangs and provide leadership opportunities through its civic leaders program, and will help prepare students for college or work through its tutoring program. The civic leaders program will serve 120 students ages 12-20 (most will be 14-17) coming from low income families in the west Bronx. Of these 120 participants, 50 will be enrolled in the academic tutoring project. Performance measures will include the development of leadership skills among all participants, regular attendance and improved grades by at least 60% of tutoring participants, with at least 50% of the tutored students showing improvement on the New York Regents test.
