Description: The Hope and Help for All Foundation, Inc. (HHAF) in collaboration with the Junior High School 135 (JHS 135) and Lehman College of the City University of New York proposes to implement the MAPS (Mentoring Adolescents/Partnering Success) program. The HHFA/MAPS program will seek to decrease the risk factors of poor school participation and performance, along with enhancing protective factors such as the connectedness to his/her school and community. MAPS will select 30 at-risk students from school (JHS 135) to provide: 1) academic, vocational interest and attitudinal assessment; 2) refer students in need of academic assistance to the appropriate special education, remedial and/or tutorial resources, and/or emotional issues; 3) follow-up on each referred case; 4) reduce school truancy; 5) reduce incidents of school-based discipline (i.e., detentions and suspension hearings); and 6) improve academic performance. Students will be matched with a mentor from Lehman College for a minimum of 1 hour per week. Short term goals with intermediate outcomes as measured by school records are to: increase school attendance; decrease school-based disciplinary actions; and increase academic performance. Changes in the students attitudes toward their future will be reflected by attitudinal measures.
