Description: Fordham Evangelical Lutheran Church/Youth Ministry has provided intervention and educational services to youth at-risk for nearly six years in the community of Fordham located in Bronx, New York. This project will provide a positive and constructive place for youth ages 10-16, who are immigrants or the children of immigrants, to build positive peer and adult relationships. The project will: (1) Recruit 15 mentors. Mentors will meet weekly with their mentee, develop a relationship with the student, engage the student in her/his interest and be a positive role mode. Mentors will be recruited from Fordham University, Monroe College and Manhattan College. They will be screened and trained by Mentoring USA. (2) Recruit 5 tutors. The tutors will come from Monroe College and will assist with homework and work to strengthen individual student's academic weaknesses. These weaknesses include students who are unable to read at grade level and children who do not yet speak English proficiently. Most of the students who attend Monroe College are bilingual (Spanish/English). (3) Provide educational programs including pre-job training, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, and life skills seminars. (4) Improve academic skills of program participants. Performance measures will report on academic performance of participants and will be included in the Categorical Assistance Project Report submitted to OJJDP twice annually.
