Description: The Mississippi Department of Public Safety (DPS) is reducing the backlog of forensic cases at the Mississippi Crime Laboratory (MCL). They are hiring additional staff to provide a liaison between the laboratory and the various components of the criminal justice system to improve forensic services. A functioning case manager is being assigned to each of their four laboratories to improve the efficiency and productivity and allow the expert forensic analysts more time to examine cases. Mississippi DPS is improving the timeliness of MCL services by restructuring the organization, replacing an obsolete scanning electron microscope and purchasing a comparison microscope and image analysis software package for the Biloxi Laboratory. A line item in the FY 2005 Congressional budget provides funding for the Mississippi Crime Laboratory Backlog Reduction Project.
