Description: The New Jersey Institute of Technology has developed and demonstrated a technology for user identification based upon biometric determination using Dynamic Grip Recognition (DGR). It has direct applicability to safeguarding weapons from unauthorized use, accidental discharge and illegal transfer and it is a key technology towards the development of a child-proof smart gun. The goal of this proposal is construct a prototype demonstrator. It includes all of the previous recipients of NIJ funding and leverages their experience and developments leading to electronic safety systems for use in handguns. NJIT seeks this funding to bring biometric-based user authentication technology to a point where commercial development can proceed using a common, proven approach applied to the broadest set of weapons and suppliers.
