Description: This grant will provide funding to Milwaukee's District Attorney's Office Domestic Violence Unit for two felony Assistant District Attorneys and three misdemeanor Assistant District Attorneys, thereby enhancing the quality of domestic violence prosecutions. This permits thorough follow-up investigations to secure essential evidence, careful case preparation for trial, timely and effective prosecution of offenders, and continuing contact with victims to ensure that the victim's needs for safety are carefully considered during the prosecution of the case. Effective coordination with law enforcement, judicial authorities, and community agencies is improved. Additionally, the applicant will subgrant $50,000 to the Legal Action of Wisconsin (LAW). LAW will provide to those eligible domestic violence victims free civil legal advice, advocacy, and representation. LAW's will help victims resolve civil legal problems that arise consequent to violence and use civil remedies to enhance safety planning, hold the abuser accountable, and become independent of the violence.
