Description: CeaseFire, the primary initiative of the Chicago Project for Violence Prevention, utilizes a public health approach to stop shootings and killings in some of the most violent neighborhoods in Chicago and selected communities in Illinois. The goal of the project is to reduce the rate of killings in CeaseFire cities to be at or below the national rate of 5.7 per 100,000. To do so, CeaseFire implements five core components: (1) community mobilization; (2) outreach to those most at risk of shooting someone else or being shot themselves; (3) faith-based leader involvement; (4) cooperation with law enforcement; and (5) public education. Funds provided through this agreement will be used to: (1) support CeaseFire in West Garfield Park and West Humboldt Park, two Chicago communities that have experienced disproportionately high levels of shootings and killings and where the presence of CeaseFire appears to have been associated with reductions in both; (2) enhance the capacity of CeaseFire to serve other communities through the addition of outreach workers and violence interrupters; and (3) support core functions that are essential to the delivery of professional services and high performance in these sites.
