Description: The Doe Fund increases employment and reduces recidivism among ex-offenders in the New York City (NYC) metropolitan area through its First Step and Ready, Willing & Able (RWA) programs. These programs use a work-centered approach to reintegrating ex-offenders into America's economic and social mainstream. Ex-offenders have great difficulty finding employment, due to criminal histories, substance abuse, lack of education and skills, lack of stable housing, and poor work histories. In RWA and First Step, they build work histories and develop employment skills in paid work assignments while they acquire the work ethic that employers value and that most ex-offenders lack. Program participants commit to remaining drug and alcohol free, as verified by random and frequent urine tests. In addition to paid work and job skills training, they receive ancillary supportive services which include relapse prevention, AA and NA meetings, literacy education, job readiness, financial skills training, computer skills training, case management and job placement. The programs provide follow-up services to ensure that ex-offenders make a lasting transition to self-sufficiency and crime-free living.
