Description: The events of September 11, 2001 and the proximity of Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) to Washington, D.C and the Pentagon have increased safety and security concerns in all the system's school's and communities. FCPS has 24 high schools, each with its own unique challenges. Mount Vernon High School was selected to pilot the safety and security project because it experiences a disproportionate number of identified behaviors and events that has the potential to negatively impact its learning environment. These activities include selected disruptive behavior, violent incidents, vandalism, and police reports. The goal of this project is to improve building security, reduce/eliminate trespassers, reduce selected student behavior incidents, and violent incidents. It is believed that the enhancements will improve the overall sense of security to the building, resulting in a reduction in the selected behaviors. Project objectives include the following enhancements: Install and implement the use of external video surveillance cameras; add two Safety and Security Assistants; conduct four drug searches (two per year for two years) using the Fairfax County Police Department K-9 unit; implement the use of school parking lot monitoring scanner and software; purchase electric bicycle for use by school security staff; train staff on new security procedures; provide overtime funding for security staff for extracurricular activities; equip all fire alarm pull stations with alarmed covers; provide uniforms for safety and security staff; hire security specialist for five Motorola HT1000 radios with bank chargers to additional security staff.
