Description: With funding from the Congressionally Mandated Award Program, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (BCI) plans to expand the capability of its Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) to accept electronic palm prints into its database. The addition of electronic palm prints will allow BCI to better serve the agencies that currently rely on its system to process latent prints. Ohio currently does not have a state-wide repository of palm prints. BCI plans to acquire the hardware and software to implement a statewide palm print repository to provide a centralized database of palm prints and fingerprints. The palm AFIS will be integrated with the 10-print AFIS already in place. Latent print workstations will then be able to conduct dual searching of palm prints and fingerprints using the same latent submission. The integration of palm prints into the AFIS will enable Ohio to become a leader in the implementation of the Compact Council/CJIS recommendations as well as increase the number of crimes solved using latent print evidence.
