Description: The Bureau of Justice Assistance will award a grant to the Town of Taos, New Mexico, under the 2005 Congressionally Mandated Awards to pay the salary and benefits of one additional police officer for the Town's police department and to purchase one additional police vehicle for daily policing activities. During the past two years, Taos County has experienced an increase in violent crimes, which law enforcement agencies have attributed to gangs and significant increase in drug traffic. In response to this problem, the Town Council has authorized the hiring of one additional police officer to provide quality policing by working in the areas of traffic enforcement and criminal investigations. Funds will provide the officer with firearms; one Taser; tactical equipment; one patrol unit equipped with mobile data laptops, in-car digital cameras and radios; various law enforcement accessories (uniforms, handcuffs, and batons); and continuing education advancement training (which includes local travel costs). In addition, the Taos Police Department will purchase an additional fully-functional (marked) police vehicle for daily policing activities. This vehicle will be placed immediately into the patrol fleet to fill a vacancy of one vehicle.
