Description: The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is continuing the Rural Law Enforcement Mobile Training Project to address the lack of continuation training provided to rural law enforcement jurisdictions that have either very small or non-existent budgets to cover training/travel costs. They are adapting the Mississippi Board of Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training's basic law enforcement academy training curriculum and developing advanced courses built upon the academy curriculum. They are putting training in close proximity to multiple law enforcement agencies and offering individual courses for several days in a row, allowing agencies to rotate their personnel through the courses. The staff of the Rural Law Enforcement Mobile Training Project is delivering courses to law enforcement officers throughout the State of Mississippi. They are selecting training sites convenient to several law enforcement agencies to allow officers to respond quickly if an emergency arises within their jurisdictions. The courses are delivered to multiple locations around the state, allowing the greatest number of police officers the opportunity to attend. USM is increasing the number of law enforcement officers who have access to the advanced training. A line item in the FY 2005 Congressional budget provides continuation funding for the University of Southern Mississippi Rural Law Enforcement Mobile Training Project.
