Description: The creation of the SMU Family Research Center was created from the need to understand and stop family violence and related family problems. The SMU Family Research Center will be the first scientifically-based Center of its type in Texas, and one of only a few in the United States. Its immediate focus to advance and disseminate scientific knowledge on family violence and treatment for victims of violence is unique and timely. The creation of the SMU Family Research Center also takes advantage of current strengths of the SMU faculty, particularly in the Department of Psychology. The Department of Psychology houses a number of prominent researchers, two of which (Jouriles and McDonald) have competed successfully for federal funds to conduct research on family violence. Examples of funded research include investigations of the causes and consequences of family violence and family interventions designed to decrease child behavior problems following exposure to violence. Having a core of good faculty in this area gives SMU an unusual opportunity to make a real contribution to the betterment of society. The mission of the SMU Family Research Center is to advance and disseminate knowledge on families, and an immediate focus of the Center will be on the topic of family violence. The primary means by which the Center will advance knowledge is by fostering collaborative, cutting-edge research. Knowledge will be disseminated through a range of educational and service activities. Thus, the Center will have three main functional areas: research, education, and service.
