Description: The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office will use grant funds to support the Southern Anti-terrorist Training Academy (SARTA) Project. The primary objective of this project is to train Louisiana law enforcement officers and first responders in homeland defense measures. Using specialized training, crime mapping, incident analysis, and associated technologies, law enforcement personnel, patrol officers and supervisors will be trained to divert to special task units if a catastrophic event occurs within their jurisdiction as well as assist and support other agencies if an event occurs outside their jurisdiction. The goals of the SARTA project are to restore a sense of community well-being by training all law enforcement officers in homeland defense measures regardless of the community size or location; focus on the problems and concerns of communities and neighborhoods by initiating a comprehensive web based terrorist education and identification program to build better relationships between law enforcement and the community; through training, develop a comprehensive strategy within each Louisiana community to identify potential sources of anti-government activity and to control and prevent intrusions where possible; use community policing concepts and anti-terrorist training efforts to encourage citizens to take an active role in homeland security; and coordinate and concentrate existing law enforcement resources in Louisiana communities to maximize the response capability if a catastrophic event occurs. Grant funds will be utilized to support training, purchase equipment, and develop and conduct training.
