Description: The Philadelphia Police Department is implementing Operation Safe Streets to undermine illicit drug sales conducted in open air markets. The purpose of this initiative is twofold; to disrupt drug sales in targeted areas by increased uniform police presence and intensified patrols; and decrease the number and scope of homicides, robberies and aggravated assaults that are a consequence of the open air drug trade. During this third phase of Operation Safe Streets, law enforcement officers from the Operations Narcotics and Special Operations Bureaus are targeting areas called Priority Corners. They are making neighborhoods safe for the citizens in the City of Philadelphia. A line item in the FY 2005 Congressional budget provides funding to the Philadelphia Police Department for Operation Safe Streets.
