Description: The City of Newport, Rhode Island is purchasing an improved wireless silent communication system for the Newport Police Department. The installation of a new system is improving communication between police field units and the dispatcher. It is improving law enforcement response time to incidents and accidents. It increased the availability of information to police officers for pro-active and reactive responses to pubic threats. The City of Newport is also implementing a city-wide video network for detecting public safety threats and protect the citizens of Newport City. A line item in the FY 2005 Congressional budget provides funding to the City of Newport for the Newport Emergency Telecommunications Project.
