Description: This program will enhance and maintain a Public Corruption Unit established within the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office in August 2004. The unit is currently staffed by an attorney, investigator, and clerical support person. The volume of corruption cases being processed coupled with the concept of vertical prosecution has made it difficult for one prosecutor to effectively prosecute the cases currently pending. Through the use of this grant, the OPDA's Office will increase their staff by (2) full time attorneys and (1) part-time investigative assistant. The attorneys and investigator funded will begin the process of clearing the backlog of corruption cases to be screened. Cases accepted for prosecution will be handled vertically by the attorney conducting the investigation. As a result of this project, the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office plans to make more efficient use of criminal justice system resources by providing specialized attention to public corruption cases and to serve the public more effectively by instilling confidence in the investigative and judicial process established to weed out corruption.
