Description: Eastern Michigan University faculty and staff as well as community experts will provide consultative and technical assistance in such areas as asset mapping, grant procurement, program design, implementation, and evaluation of best practices to prevent and reduce youth crime and violence in the African-American, Latino, and Arab-American communities of Southeastern Michigan. The Strengthening Organizations, Building Communities project will work with participating culturally diverse organizations to implement and evaluate a summer youth summit. The primary purpose of the summit will be to assist youth in developing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to protect themselves from violence. The project will continue to reinforce the innovative model of the University's Center for Community Building and Civic Engagement for community capacity-building through a Community Leadership Fellows Program. The model focuses on enhancing the capabilities of community organizations that serve culturally diverse populations in Southeastern Michigan.
