Description: The Greenville Technical College (GTC) will use their FY 2005 congressionally earmarked funds in collaboration with the Greenville City, County, and state law enforcement communities for Phase 1 of a project to establish a shared DNA/forensics laboratory on the GTC main campus. This project will not only expand and improve investigative services for area law enforcement agencies, but will ultimately provide innovative training services in biotechnology and forensic science for a broad range of students and criminal justice practitioners. The primary goal of Phase 1 of the project involves development and accreditation of the laboratory. Over a sixteen month period, the primary project partners (GTC and the Greenville County Department of Public Safety's Crime Laboratory) will establish a DNA/forensics analysis laboratory on the GTC main campus that meets Quality Assurance Standards for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories established by the DNA Advisory Board. The laboratory will seek and obtain full accreditation by a nationally recognized accrediting body such as The American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB), the National Association of Medical Examiners (NAME), or other appropriate accrediting bodies. The laboratory will also develop a plan for external audit by the National Forensic Science Technology Center for its first year of operations. The new laboratory will be open to perform casework by January 31, 2007.
