Description: CHWC Inc. is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 Community Development Corporation (CDC) working to rebuild neighborhoods. CHWC is partnering with grass roots organizations to work collaboratively on crime issues on Central Avenue and in neighborhoods around CHWC development. CHWC works exclusively in the urban core neighborhoods of Kansas City, Kansas. These neighborhoods over the past 40 years have become crime ridden because of disinvestment. CHWC builds new homes, rehabilitates existing homes, and provides minor home repair for those owner-occupied homes around our new and rehabbed developments. Currently CHWC is building/rehabbing over 50 homes in strategic and concentrated areas to maximize impact. The CHWC Community Safety Initiative (CSI) will reduce crime and create a better quality of life for residents. The CSI Strategy is to suppress and significantly reduce crime in targeted areas. This is done through partnership and community development. Policing residents and business owners will identify problem properties in the CHWC target area. Through aggressive development CHWC will seek to acquire these properties for demolition or rehabilitation and convert them to single-family, owner-occupied homes. The Communication Strategy is to reduce crime through improved communication between Spanish and English speakers. This is done through partnership with UCRL and El Centro. The collaboration will aggressively work to increase the involvement of Hispanic residents in neighborhood crime prevention. Objectives of this strategy are to: 1) Increase the number of Spanish speaking residents involved in neighborhood groups. 2) Educate Spanish-speaking residents on crime prevention and legal process in the US. 3) Reduce fear of the police and the threat of being deported. The Community Policing Strategy is a nation-wide strategy used to bridge the gab between police, citizens, businesses and other stakeholders.
