Description: Wayne County plans to continue the jail diversion program by continuing and expanding two projects. The goals of the jail diversion program are to reduce jail overcrowding by providing programming designed to meet the needs of offenders and to reduce recidivism. One project will expand the target population by including inmates with mental health problems. One screener will be added to the case differentiation unit to interface with psychiatric social workers, mental health advocates, and criminal court staff to meet the mental health needs of these inmates. The screener will ensure that the inmate has prescribed medications during program participation and that community mental health plans are completed to ensure that medications are continued and aftercare plans are in place prior to the inmate's release. This project will serve approximately 250 inmates each year. The jail diversion project for inmates with domestic violence convictions will be continued. Treatment of these inmates is based on a cognitive behavioral therapy model and is designed to change destructive thinking patterns that lead to abusive relationships. The project includes an aftercare component so that inmates may continue treatment after release from jail. Approximately 80 inmates are served each year.
